Circular motion – looping the loop

During the school holidays I enjoyed a trip to the circus. All good fun & always there’s some Physics!

The highlight for me was the Globe of Death – three motorbikes riding in circles in a spherical cage.

(Something like this….)

Which got me thinking – just how fast do the riders need to be going? What happens if they go too fast? This is a question that was addressed in the circular motion podcast: (v2/r) > g

The British TV show Fifth gear had a segment about this very question:
